Volunteer with us

Volunteers can be a powerful force for change, and our volunteers support and boost the work we do, and the quality of the services we are able to provide.

Volunteering with us is a great way to connect with other humanists, to develop new skills and gain experience, and do something worthwhile.

We don’t have a typical volunteer, and we welcome everyone (aged 18+) who shares our values.

Our volunteers are also our representatives in the local community, letting people know that we are here, what we stand for, and what we can do for them.

Types of volunteer

There are loads of different ways to get involved, depending on your skills and interests. These include:

  • As part of a local group organising team
  • Identifying and organising guest speakers
  • Chairing meetings
  • Welcoming new members
  • Helping to host a pub night or coffee mornings
  • Writing content for a local humanist newsletter
  • Helping to publicise events and raise awareness of our campaigns
  • Attending actions and demonstrations
  • Helping with research or administrative tasks
  • Creating content for our local social media channels
  • Facilitating our book group meetings
  • Coming up with ideas for new ways to engage our members

Our trustees are also volunteers! Find out more about joining our board of trustees.

Our definition of a volunteer is someone who commits time and energy to benefit others, freely, through personal choice and without expecting financial reward, except for the reimbursement of agreed out of pocket expenses. Our volunteers make a commitment to support the work of Humanist Society Scotland, and subscribe to our vision and values.
