What is Humanism? A conversation with Annemarie Young

Join us on the 9th November at Blackwells Bookshop in Edinburgh where Humanist Society Scotland will be hosting an event with What Is Humanism? Co-author Annemarie Young.

What is Humanism? is the first book of its kind aimed at the new curriculum for upper primary and lower secondary school children. Written by Michael Rosen and Annemarie Young with contributions from well-known Humanists including Stephen Fry, Philip Pullman, and Shappi Khorsandi; the book examines how Humanists respond to fundamental questions about morals and ethics, the origins of life, celebrating life’s important milestones, religion and the state.

In a conversation with HSS Multimedia Content Editor Nicole Skipper, Annemarie will discuss her experience of bringing ‘big questions’ to young readers, and why it is so important to encourage them to think about these subjects for themselves.

Annemarie is a writer and series editor of non-fiction for older children and of fiction for young readers, and an editorial consultant for children’s books and primary education. With her husband, Anthony Robinson, she has published a series called the Refugee Diaries, telling the stories of refugee children forced to flee their country in search of refuge, and they run workshops in schools using these books.

Speaking about the event, Nicole Skipper said:

“I’m very excited to host this event and discuss this ground-breaking book with one of its authors. As well as my work with HSS I am also an aspiring children’s writer, and share Annemarie’s belief in the power of books to open readers’ minds and overcome prejudice. This is sure to be an insightful evening where myself, and the audience, will have the chance to put our questions to a Humanist author.”

The event will run from 18:30-20:00 and is free, but ticketed, so make sure you reserve your place today.

Last year we launched a joint campaign with the British Humanist Association to send What is Humanism? To every primary school in the UK. You can donate to the campaign here.
