Speaking in advance of the gathering Gary McLelland, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for HSS – as well as a Board Member of the European Humanist Federation, said:

“It’s great to be heading to Malta to join our colleagues from across Europe and beyond. The weekend will be a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Humanist organisations and their effective campaigning, as well as exploring the grave challenges that we face together.

“Over the last year HSS has significantly increased its contribution to international campaigning and advocacy. We have been working with partners in Canada, Bangladesh, and all across Europe to protect and promote human rights and equality.

“Across the world Humanists face discrimination and persecution, and in many countries we have seen a concerted campaign of targeted violence against Humanist and secular activists.”

“We also face a range of challenges such as the European refugee crisis. Humanists have a key role to help shape the way we approach these issues, by challenging lazy stereotypes and remembering to put our shared humanity at the heart of a shared response.”
