Humanist Society statement on events in Catalonia Fraser Sutherland • October 2017 In reaction to the events unfolding on Sunday in Catalonia, Humanist Society Scotland have called for European nations and institutions to ensure that the right to peaceful protest and assembly is upheld. Gordon MacRae, Chief Executive of Humanist Society Scotland said, “Humanists strongly support the principles of free assembly and peaceful protest and we are concerned by images of violence emerging from Catalonia over the weekend. “In a democracy, peaceful protest and assembly must never be met with state violence.
