Humanist Society Scotland Donate £1k to Mubarak Bala Appeal Fund

To mark Mubarak Bala’s 300th day in arbitrary detention Humanists International asked humanist organisations and individuals across the world to contribute to the #FreeMubarakBala fundraising campaign.  Humanist Society Scotland made a £1000 donation to the fund on behalf of our members, who have been active in the campaign to release Bala.

Chief Executive of Humanist Society Scotland, Fraser Sutherland, said,

“Humanist Society Scotland are proud to contribute to Mubarak Bala’s defence fund. And as long as Mubarak remains imprisoned without charge, we will do all that we can to raise awareness of his plight and to defend his right to freedom of belief.”

The legal fund for Bala is essential as the Nigerian authorities continue to hold Bala without charge. On March 1st 2021 the Federal High Court in Abuja heard a petition to relocate Bala to Abjua, where he stands the possibility of a fair trial. The court adjourned until the 20th April 2021, by which time Bala will have spent 354 days in arbitrary detention. Humanists International believes that Bala is being targeted for the peaceful exercise of his rights to freedom of expression and religion or belief, and will continue to fight for Bala’s release.
