Humanist Society Scotland calls for more humane intervention in the Mediterranean Humanist Society Scotland • April 2015 The deadly trade in people fleeing conflict for safety in Europe stains the moral integrity of our political leaders across the EU. A policy that indirectly tolerates the death of hundreds of our fellow human beings as a form of deterrent fails the most basic ethical standards we expect from our Governments. Humanist share the values of empathy and compassion which we believe can make the world a better place to live for everybody. These values have been sadly missing in the recent approach to patrolling the Mediterranean and the unwillingness of many nations to shelter those in need of refuge. Humanist Society Scotland echoes calls for the UK Government to back proposals for a more humane approach to the continuing tragedy in the Mediterranean.
