A Brief Survey of the Scottish Witch Hunt (online)

Date: Monday 4th November   /   Time: 7:30pm - 9:00pm

A Brief Survey of the Scottish Witch Hunt with guest speaker Louise Yeoman, co-director of the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft.

There may be humanists who feel that witches and witchcraft have nothing to do with humanism. But it may not be so easy to dismiss a cultural phenomenon that is a shameful part of Scottish history. Would being a humanist have been enough to have led to suspicion in the past? Would the mood of the times have led good people with or without religion to persecute others?

We are fortunate to have an expert to provide background and history at a time of year when tales of witches, enchanters, and sorcerers flourish.

Louise Yeoman has published academically on the subject and produced the BBC podcast series ‘Witch Hunt‘.

The meeting will be chaired by Cathy Crawford.

This event is hosted online on Zoom by Edinburgh Humanists but open to all. Once you RSVP via Meetup, you will be provided with the link to join the meeting. Please pop Monday 4th November at 7.30pm in your calendar, and have your laptop/device fired-up and ready to go.

The event will be followed by a Humanist Pub Night in in the back room of the Kenilworth Pub in Edinburgh on Wednesday 6th November at 7pm. This will be an opportunity to discuss the themes of Louise’s talk further if you wish.
