Humanist Society co-signs letter urging MSPs to separate fact from fiction ahead of assisted dying vote
March 16, 2026
On Thursday 12 March we shared a letter composed by our allies at Friends at the End and signed by dozens of representatives of human rights organisations, politicians and academics. It urged MSPs to separate fact from fiction ahead of a crucial, once-in-a-generation vote on assisted dying.
Our Chair Jennifer Buchan and Policy and Campaigns Officer Joe Higgins are amongst the dozens of signatories to a letter penned by Friends at the End, sent to MSPs ahead of a crucial final-stage vote on assisted dying for Scotland on 17 March.
Other signatories to the letter include human rights and LGBT+ rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, science presenter Professor Jim Al-Khalili, former Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, and many others.
The letter busts six myths spread by the opposition to assisted dying. These include the idea that vulnerable people will be coerced, that assisted dying laws inevitably create a “slippery slope” to wider legislation, and that disabled people are at risk from the law.
Read the full letter at the link below. And use the box below to write to your MSPs telling them you back assisted dying for Scotland.
Tell your MSP the Time is Now for an Assisted Dying law
Please help us reach every MSP in Scotland to ask them to support Liam McArthur’s Assisted Dying bill in Scotland.
