Our small grants scheme is open to anyone planning an event or project celebrating humanist values.
Each year on 21 June we celebrate World Humanist Day. It’s an opportunity for people and groups around the world to celebrate and promote humanist values. Once again, we are offering individuals and groups in Scotland small grants of up to £250 for activities marking World Humanist Day. A limited number of larger grants of up to £500 will be available for exceptional ideas.
What do our small grants support?
We welcome applications from any group or individual proposing a project or event that promotes the vision and values of Humanist Society Scotland. Humanism is a worldview based on secularism, rationality, empathy, and compassion. Read our explainer here. Our active campaigns are on assisted dying, ending LGBT+ conversion therapy, allowing school pupils to opt out of religious observance, combatting climate change, and more. See the full list on our campaigns page.
Last year World Humanist Day grants supported art projects, film screenings, guided walks, and more. Read our round-up for more information. Other activities funded in the past include tree plantings, multi-faith picnics, and book launches.
In general, grants are used to cover costs such as volunteer expenses, room hire, refreshments, travel costs, and basic materials. We will offer grants of up to £250, except in exceptional cases, where we may offer up to £500. Your activity must take place in Scotland on or near World Humanist Day on 21 June. We will accept rolling applications until 26 May 2025 or until our budget is spent.
