University of Edinburgh humanist society wins award

March 12, 2014

The Humanist Society Scotland (HSS) are pleased to learn that the University of Edinburgh Humanist Society has won the Student Secular Activity of the Year awarded by the National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secularist Student Societies (ASH).

The prize was given in recognition of their work in promoting secularism on campus, and their motion calling for the Edinburgh University Student Association to take a position against involuntary segregation in any of its buildings was particularly applauded, even though the motion itself was defeated amid accusations of Islamophobia.

Douglas McLellan, Chief Executive of the HSS, said “I am pleased for these students who are promoting humanism and secularism at the University of Edinburgh. We were surprised and disappointed that EUSA voted to maintain forced segregation in student association buildings and we
applaud the efforts of the University of Edinburgh Humanist Society to challenge these outdated attitudes.”
